A Single Rose, Many Stories

In this article, we will see how Floral Artist Andrei Bindea uses a Single Rose to tell Many Stories. To explore this idea, he chose our Red Naomi roses, noting that these roses are the most iconic. He gave it intention in three very different contexts. Each time, the same flower told a different story. Every flower, bouquet, or arrangement should carry a purpose. For Teachers’ Day, for corporate events, for romance, always with intent.

A while ago, I discovered Thursd and myThursd Meetup Spot. It allowed me to show my ideas on this worldwide stage. And write about my creations and how my inspiration was transformed into these beauties, even if I say it myself. In floristry, speed often takes the front seat. Flowers are tied quickly, turned into products, and passed from one hand to another. But flowers are not just products. They are vessels of meaning. And I believe they should be thought, not just tied together.

At Its Best, Floristry Is Not Decoration; It Is Conscious Creation.

Flowers are breathtaking in themselves. Their colors, textures, and fragility make them irresistible. Yet when treated only as tokens of tradition, their full potential is lost. Every flower, bouquet, or arrangement should carry a purpose. A flower can heal, encourage, or empower. And people do not remember a petal or a color. They remember how it made them feel. This is why creating with purpose transforms flowers from mere objects into storytellers.

“Without purpose, we are only binding flowers

With purpose, we are creating meaning.

Without intention, they decorate.

With intention, they communicate.”Andrei

Gratitude Blooming for the 5th of October – Teachers’ Day

Every Teachers’ Day, millions of children walk through school gates. In certain parts of the world, almost without exception, they carry flowers. But here lies a paradox: most bouquets look like they are meant for the children, though they are offered to the teachers. Even more striking, many of them look exactly the same. Imagine a teacher receiving ten nearly identical bouquets. She may smile politely, but will she feel anything lasting? Now imagine her receiving a bouquet intentionally crafted to say:

“Thank you for being an open book. Thank you for shaping minds.”

This is the difference between tradition and intention.

Corporate: Power Without Words

Corporate floristry is often reduced to decoration. Yet flowers in such spaces can do much more—they can set the tone, embody values, and shape perception. In the reception of a premium corporate headquarters, I would place the Red Naomi at the heart of a bold, theatrical, and sophisticated bouquet. It became an ambassador of power and elegance. It did not ask for attention. It commanded it.

Romance: Beyond Predictable Passion

The most obvious and emotional setting for Red Naomi is, of course, romance. But even here, intention elevates the design. Instead of creating a predictable “I love you,” I paired the roses with orchids and lilies. The result carried a deeper message: passion, yes, but also admiration, respect, gratitude, and the desire to be fully present. This was not just romance. It was a layered declaration of love.

When Flowers Outlive Themselves

There are times I create simply for beauty. The result may be admired, but it is fleeting. And there are times I create with purpose. Those designs live longer than the flowers themselves. They are carried not only in photographs, but in memory. That is the true power of floristry with intention: to turn flowers into storytellers, and beauty into meaning.

For Annick Mertens, All Saints’ Day holds a special place in her heart. It is a time when she pauses to remember and honour those who have passed away, especially her loved ones. For Annick, the tradition of bringing flowers to their graves is a beautiful way to stay connected to their memory.

Changing Trends in Floral Arrangements

Over the years, I’ve noticed a shift in how we approach floral arrangements for this occasion. Double graves adorned with large bouquets seem to be becoming less common. Many people are choosing cremation, which naturally leads to smaller grave markers. This change has inspired me to adapt my floral designs accordingly.

Embracing Creativity and Sustainability

As a florist, I’m constantly seeking ways to innovate while remaining mindful of sustainability. One of my favourite materials to work with is bio-oasis, which allows me to create stunning, eco-friendly, and stunning arrangements.

When it comes to flowers, I have a soft spot for Porta Nova Red Naomi FUTURA roses.

Porta Nova Futura offers the same stunning Red Naomi quality, grown with 100% wind energy and a 95% lower footprint.

Their rich, velvety red hue and full blooms make them stand out beautifully. They embody elegance and strength, making them perfect for this solemn occasion.

Tips for Creating Meaningful Arrangements

Here are some insights I’ve gathered over the years that might help you craft your floral tributes for All Saints’ Day.

Keep it Simple: Focus on arrangements that require less labor. This makes the process more enjoyable and efficient.

Opt for Series Work: Instead of custom designs, consider creating series arrangements that can be replicated easily.

Limit Your Resources: Avoid overwhelming yourself with too many examples. Concentrate on designs that use fewer materials.

Prepare in Advance: Gather natural elements like branches, moss, and bark ahead of time. This will streamline your creative process.

Choose Quality Flowers: Always prioritize high-quality blooms. They not only look better but also last longer.

Sustainable Materials: Use materials that are eco-friendly and sustainable.

Organize Your Workflow: Create a schedule for each type of arrangement and assign tasks to staff members if you’re working with a team.

A Heartfelt Tribute

Creating floral arrangements for All Saints’ Day is more than just a task; it’s an opportunity to express love and remembrance. Each flower tells a story, and through our arrangements, we keep the memories of our loved ones alive. Embrace this tradition with creativity and care, and let your flowers speak from the heart.

We make a base from polystyrene, sturdy sticks, tape, and Cobra leaf. We only use the Red Naomi, supplemented with sea foam and Selaginella in rust tones. This base can be made in advance.

We cover the base with split and colored sunflower stems. The Equisetum, or snake grass, adds a clean, modern accent, perfect for an urn or smaller memorial designs.

We extend this shape using pit reed bands. We use the Caleocephalus as a green filling. Quick and easy. We divide the roses into different heights.

We go for a sleek look with these Miscanthus grasses and Red Naomi roses. We nail 6 staples to a wooden block, on which we attach the grasses. Nice to work sustainably in this way!

This heart was bordered with grape vines. Thanks to small screws in the wood, the branches stay nicely and firmly in place.

To promote sustainability within the floriculture industry, we’ve called on our florist community to take part in a purposeful challenge: design beautiful floral arrangements using Red Naomi Futura roses: celebrating life’s special moments while making environmentally conscious floral art. Red Naomi FUTURA stands out as the rose with the lowest carbon footprint available on the European market.

The next floral artist to take up our challenge, after our freinds from Stilfloristerna i Linköping, is Krisztián Kövér, an award-winning master florist, entrepreneur and teacher from Hungary. He is a respected name in floristry, having won the Hungarian Championships in 2018 and emerging 3rd in 2019. He also won the “Best Floral Shop” title in 2007. Here’s his story on sustainable floristry and about this beautiful composition he calls FUTUR(A)E LOVE!

Let’s start by getting to know you a bit more.

I’ve been working as a floral designer for 32 years. I used to run my own flower shops, so I have a deep understanding of how floristry operates on a daily basis—what expectations florists face, and how customers make their decisions.

For many years now, I’ve been giving demonstrations and teaching, and over the last 8–10 years I’ve focused almost exclusively on education. I believe it’s important to bring the different players in our profession closer together—growers, florists, and customers, both in Hungary and abroad.

I’m a member of the Floral Fundamentals collective and serve as a brand ambassador for several international companies such as Decorum, Marginpar, Lehner Wool, and HR Thewireman. I also maintain strong partnerships with numerous Hungarian and international brands.

These days, my inspiration mostly comes from personal experiences—not only visual impressions related to flowers, but also from travels, music events, and exhibitions.

How passionately do you approach sustainability in floristry? Do your colleagues in Hungary share this passion?

Sustainability is an important goal for me, but in Hungary, it’s difficult to integrate it into everyday practice. More sustainable products are often more expensive, and Hungarian consumers are currently very price-sensitive. That said, there is a growing group of people who prioritize sustainability in all areas of life, including flower choices.

I try to follow sustainable floristry practices—such as using compostable materials or locally sourced flowers—but I’m not dogmatic about it. Artistic freedom is also crucial for me. Sustainability is a great direction, but I don’t want it to fully tie my hands.

What was the source of inspiration for this particular design?

This piece was created with sustainability in mind. I used BIO floral foam, and natural elements like a woven basket, foraged materials, and wheat stems all support this concept. I wanted to reflect a natural, honest character throughout the arrangement.

I began by soaking the BIO floral foam and placing it in the basket, positioning it to achieve the desired height. Then I arranged the smoke bush flowers around the edge to define the final size and shape. I added the Red Naomi Futura roses, alternating with more smoke bush, wheat stems, and other foraged materials. The goal was to create a harmonious yet expressive structure.

Yes, I aimed to keep a rustic feel throughout—not only as a visual direction but also in harmony with the message of the Red Naomi FUTURA rose.

An author, speaker, and exhibition curator, Dr. Sabina Šegula believes floristry should tell personal stories, especially through wedding designs. For her, floristry is a way of life, guided by the motto: “The greatest pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do.”

We had a chance to chat with Dr Sabina after a Seminar on Wedding Floristry she conducted recently, where her students created several floral arrangements; including a heart-shaped wedding arch and bridal bouquets using Porta Nova Red Naomi roses.

Let’s get to know more about Dr Sabina

Dr. Sabina Šegula began her floristry journey at Slovenia’s largest flower shop, where she worked for seven years and served as manager. Passionate about education, she spent two decades teaching floristry, horticulture, and marketing while earning her PhD from the University of Ljubljana, with a focus on the economics of ornamental plant production.

In 2019, Dr. Šegula founded Floweracademy.si to raise the standard of floristry education in Slovenia. With no local master-level programs, she trained abroad—earning her Masterflorist title in Sweden and wedding certification in Germany with Wally Klett. Her wedding work, often using local, seasonal flowers like sedum, symbolizes lasting love.

A certified FlorCert expert and board member, she prepares candidates for international exams through the Balkans’ only private floristry school, which offers FlorCert certification. Internationally, she’s known for her Easter and Christmas designs at the Vatican, including the Pope’s balcony. She also led a national ornament project during the pandemic and coordinates Erasmus programs with free training and internships.

How can you describe Wedding Floristry in Slovenia?

Weddings in Slovenia are very diverse, but what is noticeably lacking is a strong floral culture. Too often, the flower budget is one of the last priorities in wedding planning. Florists, not wanting to lose clients, end up adjusting the decorations to fit the limited budget, even if the final result does not meet the aesthetic standards it should. Unfortunately, the trend seems to be moving toward very simple decorations, with minimal techniques used. This, in my opinion, is a core issue: it lowers the perceived value of floral design and creates the impression that little knowledge or skill is needed to create wedding decorations.

The main issue is a lack of knowledge. Trained professionals can explain the value of bridal bouquets and floral design, but the market is split. Some clients appreciate advanced design, others see flowers as just an add-on. Floristry is hardly visible at wedding fairs, showing a wider lack of floral culture. That’s why my seminars attract florists eager to grow and stay competitive. Trends often reflect a florist’s skill level, like the continued use of round, hand-tied bouquets due to limited technical training.

What important floristry techniques did the students get a chance to learn when creating the wedding heart arch and the bridal bouquet?

At my seminars, we don’t work with templates—instead, I present a variety of techniques using different types of flowers. Throughout my career, I have collaborated with Smithers-Oasis in both Slovenia and Germany, who support my educational work with their products. All participants are introduced to various floristry techniques, which I demonstrate step by step. One of the most important elements is proper flower preparation.

The first step is to prepare clean, disinfected containers filled with water enriched with flower food. The flowers are then cleaned carefully—when preparing roses, it’s crucial not to damage the stems, as wounds release plant sap that feeds bacteria in the water. Before placing the flowers in water, stems must be cut at an angle using a sharp, disinfected knife. I also always apply Quickdip, a hydrating and disinfecting solution that opens the vascular system and eliminates bacteria from the stem ends. Only after this step do we place the flowers in nutrient-enriched water. All my participants learn this process. At this seminar, the method was also demonstrated by Igor Jaklič, the representative of Smithers-Oasis Slovenia.

What is the magic behind getting the right shape and keeping the flowers fresh and hydrated?

The participants at this seminar had various levels of experience. For the Porta Nova Red Naomi roses, I selected the most advanced group, as I wanted these flowers to stand out and not get lost among the other varieties. The cascading roses were individually wired, and cotton padding was added to the stem ends. Once secured, the padding was soaked and covered with floral tape.

The other roses were inserted into the Lady holder and properly wired as well. For the heart-shaped installation, these same participants teamed up and used a special wiring technique with floral foam. We tested a new product from Smithers-Oasis for the first time.

Since the heart was on display at Arboretum Volčji Potok for an entire week during the Rose Festival, we wanted to ensure the roses had long vase life. The florists used whole floral foam bricks, first soaking them in water with cut flower food. They then wrapped the foam in a thin layer of PVC film and secured it with chicken wire. Using electrical zip ties, they attached the base and began decorating.

We love the texture and visual of the bridal bouquets. Walk us through the mix of Porta Nova Red Naomi and the other elements.

When selecting flowers, I always emphasise the importance of understanding the roles they play in an arrangement. Some flowers take on the position of kings and queens, others act as generals offering support, and the rest serve as the army or supporting staff. Once seminar participants understand the character of each flower, they can combine them more skillfully and meaningfully.

In bridal bouquets featuring roses, the leading role, naturally, was taken by the queenly Porta Nova Red Naomi roses. Complementing them was a carefully chosen selection of other flowers, along with a more creative use of decorative Smithers-Oasis aluminum wire. In these particular bouquets, the wire itself played the role of the generals.

In the bouquet featuring gold wire, the main supporting flower was Alstroemeria ‘Tesslaar’, with Alchemilla mollis, Asparagus plumosus, and Leucadendron serving as filler and background structure. In the silver wire bouquet, Asparagus plumosus was used in larger quantities, and the finishing touches—the “stars” of the arrangement—were the multi-flowered blooms of Dianthus and Astrantia

The two participants working on the rose bouquets used this opportunity as part of their preparation for international certification—one for the Masterflorist level, and the other for the Journeyman Certificate through FlorCert.

As florists, we draw inspiration from nature, design, emotion, and sometimes, from totally unexpected places. With technology evolving rapidly, we wondered: can artificial intelligence help tell authentic, heartfelt stories that resonate with our world?

In this article, we present an interview with an AI character, a passionate florist called Elin Andersdotter. She shared with us her excitement for Midsummer celebrations, and her favourite floral designs during this season.

Could this kind of storytelling be a creative spark for your next bouquet, social post, or customer conversation? We’d love to know; does this inspire you?

An interview with Elin Andersdotter of Blomsterkrona, Uppsala

On the magic of Midsummer, Scandinavian tradition, and the power of Porta Nova Red Naomi®

In the green heart of Uppsala, florist Elin Andersdotter prepares for her busiest and most beloved moment of the year: Midsommar. Her shop, Blomsterkrona (which translates to Flower Crown), is overflowing with meadowsweet, wild daisies, and — nestled among the field-picked florals — the unmistakable luxury of Porta Nova Red Naomi® roses.

We visited Elin in the lead-up to the festivities, as buckets of flowers arrived and the scent of fresh-cut stems filled the air.

Elin, how would you describe Midsummer to someone who’s never experienced it?

“It’s our Nordic soul holiday. A celebration of light, nature, community — and a little romance too. People gather, barefoot in the grass, dancing around the maypole, eating strawberries, singing songs they half-remember from childhood. And flowers are everywhere. We wear them, gift them, decorate everything with them.”

And what role do flowers — and roses in particular — play in your work during this time?

“For most customers, it starts with tradition: wildflowers, herbs, simple materials. But then they want something more — something that elevates the moment. That’s where Porta Nova Red Naomi comes in. It’s like adding a single silk ribbon to a linen dress. Still natural, but with character and grace.”

“Consistency. Purity. Elegance. When you work with Red Naomi, you know what you’re getting. It allows me to take risks creatively — because the rose itself never fails.
“I considered it an honour to have the chance to showcase my work at the Kunstpalast. It was certainly a challenge to design something for/in a curated space. The exhibition “Palace Blooms” was a fascinating experience from the moment it opened. The visitors’ reaction to the pieces… incredible. Almost 35,000 visitors in 10 days, and the follow-up in my shop… the pieces have been on display in my shop since the Kunstpalast was dismantled. So many interested people still come to see the three pieces. That’s really special.”

The External Struggle for Power

Under the overall theme of Crown and Church, The External Struggle for Power was a blend of anthuriums and Porta Nova Red Naomi roses paying homage to the theatrical displays of power from centuries past. The piece symbolizes the contrast between church and kingdom.

Did the museum setting influence your creative process?

Absolutely… a curated space that tells a story triggers countless thoughts. Creating a new work from this is an exciting process. Organizing the thoughts so that an image emerges in your mind takes time. So many aspects, such as colour, technique, theme, durability, room temperature, light, and many more, have to be brought into harmony.

What story or emotion were you hoping to convey through the Eternal Struggle for Power design with Porta Nova roses?

The “Crown and Church” room is about the eternal struggle for power between these two: nobility and church. The purple/red is presented on the pillar by Red Naomi. Magnificent, monolithic, she needs only herself, she stands in the light. She is absolute.

The violet represents the church. It is interwoven with many details such as brocade, silk, eucalyptus, proteas, beech leaves, and much more. This part of the work represents the diversity of a society. Yet it stands in the background of the crown. This room is even more special because it is the “Jan Wellem Room.”
One of the museum’s most valuable paintings hangs there, with his image. Jan Wellem was one of the most powerful princes in Europe. Married to Maria di Medici, they together amassed one of the most important art collections of their time. Under pressure from the public and the church, they brought them together in one building, opened it to the public, and thus created the world’s first art museum. Today, this magnificent collection forms the foundation of the Alte Pinakothek Munich by inheritance.

Take us through the process of creating the design?

After I had decided on my rooms, organized my thoughts, and created material lists, I started organizing the materials and the floral materials. The loom had to be built. I prepared my studio for the three pieces. A seven-meter-long carpet, for example, requires a lot of space. But the frames also had to be varnished or unwound with yarn. It was important to consider which florals should be used directly and thus sent straight to the drying process… or which flowers I could only finally incorporate on-site at the museum.

I had to test out individual techniques to avoid any surprises during the work phase. At the end of the preparation, I had nine days to complete the three pieces. But this is only possible with friends who support me and optimize the work steps. For example, preparing the materials so that I could weave without wasting time.

Beliefs and religions of the ancient peoples of this world

Summary

The “Palace Blooms” project is already beyond the bounds of everyday life. Normally, I’m at the point of sale every day in my company. Work is being done for all of life’s occasions: decorations for weddings, trade fairs, funerals, indoor landscaping, and a lot of Interflora, in addition to the daily customer traffic. Breaking away from such a daily routine is a challenge that I was only able to overcome because my family and team supported me. In my daily life, I only design for others, so it was all the more exciting to create work forms just for myself. At this point, a big thank you to my three material sponsors: Porta Nova, Van der Plas, and Smithers Oasis, without whose material support I wouldn’t have been able to create this. And a thank you to the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf for giving floral designers this opportunity to make people look at flowers differently.

Celebrate with the best and be reminded that flowers aren’t just gifts—they are emotions, memories, and happiness, all wrapped up in petals of deep red velvet.

When it comes to celebrating Mother’s Day, nothing speaks louder than the timeless elegance of a rose. And when we talk about the ultimate in red roses, there’s no name quite like Porta Nova. Known worldwide for cultivating the most beautiful and sustainable Red Naomi (Futura) roses, Porta Nova sets the gold standard for quality, longevity, and sheer beauty.

This Mother’s Day, these exceptional blooms took center stage in an imaginative and heartwarming creation by floral designer Anna Loshakova, announced as the winner of the “Share the Happiness with Porta Nova” contest through myThursd. Her design captures the celebration of our moms with its originality and joyfulness. She created several designs that gave us the warm and gentle feeling a mother deserves. Watch out in the coming weeks for the moment Anna will receives her 10 buckets of Red Naomi Roses for Mother’s Day. It will be a blast!

Anna reimagined the Red Naomi roses in a truly unique and playful way: she used ice cream glasses to present the roses, crafting scoops of the best floral taste possible, that looked good enough to eat. Each glass was carefully filled with the lush, velvety Red Naomi blooms, their perfect red petals arranged to resemble scoops of delicious ice cream. The result? A charming, joyful tribute that beautifully captured the sweet and nurturing spirit of motherhood.

While Valentine’s Day might be the most recognized celebration of love, it’s far from the only one. Around the world, many cultures mark their own unique days to honour love and affection. One of the most distinctive of these celebrations is Saint Jordi’s Day in Catalonia, Spain, observed on April 23rd. Our Porta Nova Red Naomi roses are a popular choice for the occasion.

Known locally as “El Día de los Amantes” (Lovers’ Day) or “El Día de la Rosa” (The Day of the Rose), Saint Jordi’s Day is a vibrant mix of romance, literature, and local tradition. On this day, it’s customary for men to receive books and women to be gifted roses, although this tradition has evolved, with both books and roses now exchanged regardless of gender.

The streets of Barcelona and other Catalan towns come alive with flower stalls and book vendors. People browse for the perfect rose or book to give to someone special. The day’s atmosphere is festive and warm, with locals embracing the shared joy of giving and connection.

These roses are often presented with a sprig of wheat and the Catalan flag, known as the “senyera” — a red and yellow ribbon symbolising regional pride. It’s also common to find roses marked with the phrase “t’estimo,” meaning “I love you” in Catalan.

Though rooted in Catalan tradition, the influence of Saint Jordi extends beyond Barcelona. It’s also observed in other places where St George — or Sant Jordi — is honoured as a patron saint. The day offers a reminder that love can be celebrated in many ways, through thoughtful gifts, cultural customs, and moments shared.

Our friends at Floral Fundamentals recently held yet another one of their photo shoot sessions, which featured floral artists from various parts of Europe. The florists created pieces that were amazing and also quite inspiring. We chatted with three of the floral artists who made beautiful flower arrangements with our Porta Nova Red Naomi roses. They gave us some brief insight into their career journeys, what inspires them and the ‘making of’ these wonderful arrangements.

CLASSY – by Geertje Stienstra

Geertje is a Master Florist from the Netherlands who is inspired by nature, fashion and the thrill offered by interior spaces. She is an educator in the field, known for her Masterclasses and the floral art lessons she gives to schools, other institutions and individuals. She also enjoys doing photoshoots for growers, giving demonstrations and making presentations for different companies. She calls this arrangement, Classy.

Making of CLASSY

“I started with a strong wooden base and drilled holes to hold wooden sticks. Then, I added glass tubes at different heights. Inside the tubes, I placed beautiful Porta Nova Red Naomi roses, chrysanthemums, and Talinum.

For a nice finishing touch, I used delicate lunaria leaves. This arrangement is perfect for a table arrangement or a hotel reception counter.

NATURE’S EMBRACE – by Leonidas Rammos

Leonidas, based on the Greek island of Corfu, first studied Psychology in Athens before working as a Clinical Psychologist. In the year 2000, he followed his passion and became a floral artist. Since then, his work has been exhibited in galleries, featured internationally, and he has won Greece’s National Championship in 2005. He has decorated prestigious venues, including the Museum of Asian Art. As a National Judge in Greek Flower Competitions, his eye for detail and love for floristry continue to shine through his creations.

I crafted a bag woven from delicate, fine branches, seamlessly intertwined to create an organic, rustic texture. From this natural base, the Porta Nova Red Naomi roses emerge gracefully, as if they had grown there untouched by human hands.

The arrangement evokes the feeling of a small piece of nature carefully gathered and placed within an artisanal creation—a harmonious blend of nature and craftsmanship. This is a sophisticated floral gift for someone who appreciates artistic, nature-inspired arrangements. Also, once the flowers dye,the reusable handcrafted base is able to host new fresh flowers

CREATIVE FANTASY – by Melissa Smedes

Melissa is a 28-year-old Dutch floral designer who currently works in a flower shop and also takes on freelance projects. With 5 years experience in the craft, Melissa has a passion for detailed designs and enjoys adding creative touches that make her work unique. Much of her inspiration comes from fantasy.

I wanted to design a bouquet in a “fan” shape, so I chose to use this handmade frame made of aluminum wire and tape.

The deep red of the beautiful roses complements the frame perfectly. The strong stems of the red roses, tied in a sheaf-binding technique, provide a sturdy binding point.
